Both look like wood. Both click together. But underneath the photo-realistic layer, they are very different materials.
Laminate (Wood Based)
Made of fiberboard (wood pulp). It feels thicker and softer underfoot.
- Pros: Cheaper, more scratch-resistant top layer.
- Cons: Swells if it gets wet. Not for bathrooms or messy mudrooms.
Luxury Vinyl Plank - LVP (Plastic Based)
Made of PVC/polymer. It is essentially rigid plastic.
- Pros: 100% Waterproof. You can flood it and reuse it. Great for basements.
- Cons: Thinner, harder underfoot, can be more expensive.
The Verdict
Use **LVP** in bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. Use **Laminate** in living rooms and bedrooms if you want to save money.
