How to Calculate Flooring Needs

1. Room Area = Length ร— Width (in sq ft) 2. Total Needed = Room Area ร— (1 + Waste %) 3. Boxes = Total Needed รท Box Coverage (round up)

Pro tips:

  • Always round UP to the next full box
  • Keep 1-2 extra boxes for future repairs
  • Don't forget underlayment if not pre-attached

Example: 15ร—20 ft Living Room

Scenario: Installing LVP in a 15ร—20 ft living room. Each box covers 20 sq ft.

  1. Room area: 15 ร— 20 = 300 sq ft
  2. Add 10% waste: 300 ร— 1.10 = 330 sq ft needed
  3. Boxes: 330 รท 20 = 16.5 โ†’ 17 boxes
  4. At $45/box: 17 ร— $45 = $765

Result: Buy 17 boxes (340 sq ft actual coverage). Add underlayment rolls if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Laminate vs LVP - which is better?

LVP wins for durability and water resistance. It's 100% waterproof, making it ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. Laminate is cheaper but can swell if water gets underneath. For high-traffic or moisture-prone areas, choose LVP.

Do I need underlayment?

Yes, unless it's pre-attached. Underlayment provides cushioning, noise reduction, and moisture barrier. Many LVP and laminate products come with pad attached - check the specs before buying separate underlayment.

How long to acclimate flooring?

Let flooring sit in the room for 48-72 hours before installation. This allows the material to adjust to your home's temperature and humidity, preventing gaps or buckling after installation.

Can I install flooring over existing floor?

Usually yes for floating floors over most hard surfaces (tile, vinyl, hardwood). Not over carpet. The existing floor must be level, clean, and firmly attached. Check door clearance - you'll lose 1/4" to 1/2" of height.

What tools do I need for installation?

Essential: Tape measure, pencil, utility knife/saw, spacers, tapping block, pull bar, rubber mallet. Optional: Miter saw for faster cuts, knee pads for comfort.

How much does flooring installation cost?

DIY: Just materials ($300-600 for a 300 sq ft room). Professional: $1-4/sq ft labor on top of materials. Total installed: LVP $3-8/sq ft, hardwood $8-15/sq ft including materials.
