Planning Your Drywall Project
Drywall (also called sheetrock or gypsum board) is the standard wall material in modern homes. This calculator helps you determine how many sheets you need plus joint compound and tape requirements.
Before you start:
- Measure all walls: Include closets and hallways in your calculations
- Decide on sheet size: 4ร8, 4ร10, or 4ร12 depending on ceiling height
- Plan the layout: Minimize butt joints by using longer sheets
- Check for moisture areas: Bathrooms need moisture-resistant (green) board
- Consider hiring pros: Taping and finishing requires skill for good results
Types of Drywall
| Type | Thickness | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (White) | 1/2" | Walls with 16" stud spacing |
| Ceiling Board | 5/8" | Ceilings, resists sagging |
| Moisture Resistant (Green) | 1/2" | Bathrooms, kitchens (not in showers) |
| Fire-Rated (Type X) | 5/8" | Garages, code-required walls |
| Soundproof | 5/8" | Media rooms, bedrooms, offices |
Drywall Installation Tips
๐ Horizontal vs Vertical
- Horizontal: Most common for walls (fewer seams to tape)
- Vertical: Required for metal studs & some commercial
- Ceilings go first, then walls
๐ฉ Screw Spacing
- Ceilings: Every 12 inches
- Walls: Every 16 inches
- Sink screws just below surface (dimple, don't break paper)
How to Calculate Drywall Needs
1. Wall Area = (2 ร Length + 2 ร Width) ร Height
2. Ceiling Area = Length ร Width
3. Sheets = Total Area รท 32 (for 4ร8 sheets)
4. Add 10-15% waste factor
Supplies needed per sheet:
- ~1.5 lbs joint compound
- ~8 linear feet of tape
- ~32 drywall screws
Example: 12ร14 ft Bedroom
Scenario: Drywalling a 12ร14 ft bedroom with 8 ft ceilings, including ceiling.
- Perimeter: (12 + 14) ร 2 = 52 linear feet
- Wall area: 52 ร 8 = 416 sq ft
- Ceiling area: 12 ร 14 = 168 sq ft
- Total: 416 + 168 = 584 sq ft
- 4ร8 sheets (32 sq ft): 584 รท 32 = 18.25
- Add 10% waste: 20 sheets
Result: 20 sheets, ~30 lbs joint compound, 160 ft tape, 1 lb of screws
