Drywalling

Drywall Levels Explained

From garage walls to museum quality smooth coats.

Not all walls are created equal. The Gypsum Association defines 5 levels of finish. Most DIYers stop at Level 3, but should you?

Level 3: "Standard Texture Ready"

Tape embedded + one coat of mud over screws and joints. This is acceptable if you plan to apply a **heavy texture** (knockdown or popcorn).

Level 4: "Standard Smooth"

Tape + two coats. Sanded smooth. This is the standard for flat paints or light textures in residential homes.

Level 5: "The Mirror Finish"

Tape + coats + a **skim coat** over the entire wall surface. Mandatory if you are using high-gloss paint or have harsh lighting (like a long hallway with a window at the end) that shows every ripple.
