A privacy fence transforms your backyard into a sanctuary. But before you dig that first post hole, you need a solid plan. Mistakes in layout can lead to wasted lumber and property line disputes.
Step 1: Locate Property Pins
Never guess where your property line is. Find the metal survey pins buried at the corners of your lot. Ideally, set your fence line 6 inches inside the property line to ensure you own the fence completely.
6ft vs 8ft Spacing
The most common question is post spacing.
- 8 Feet: The standard. Economical because rails (2x4s) come in 8ft and 16ft lengths.
- 6 Feet: Stronger. Recommended for high-wind areas or if you want a more rigid fence that won't sag.
Step 3: Account for Gates
Don't forget the gates! A standard walk-through gate is 3-4 feet wide. A mower access gate should be at least 5 feet. When calculating materials, treat gates as separate sections.

Before you dig, always call 811 (in the US) to have utility lines marked. Hitting a gas or power line is dangerous and expensive.
