Planning Your Garden Soil

The right soil mix is the foundation of a successful garden. This calculator helps you determine how much soil, compost, or fill you need for raised beds, planters, and garden projects.

Before you buy:

  • Know your bed dimensions: Measure length, width, and depth
  • Plan for settling: Soil settles 10-20% after watering
  • Consider your plants: Vegetables need rich, loamy soil
  • Check drainage: Raised beds often need added drainage material
  • Compare prices: Bulk is cheaper; bags are easier for small projects

Types of Garden Soil

How to Calculate Soil Needs

1. Cubic Feet = Length × Width × Depth (all in feet) 2. If depth in inches: Cubic Feet = L × W × (Depth ÷ 12) 3. Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet ÷ 27 4. Bags (2 cu ft): Cubic Feet ÷ 2

Pro tips:

  • Add 10-15% extra for settling after watering
  • Bulk delivery is economical for 1+ cubic yards
  • Bags work best for small projects under 1/2 yard

Example: 4×8 ft Raised Bed

Scenario: Filling a 4×8 ft raised bed that's 12 inches deep.

  1. Cubic feet: 4 × 8 × (12 ÷ 12) = 32 cu ft
  2. Cubic yards: 32 ÷ 27 = 1.19 cubic yards
  3. Add 10% for settling: 1.3 cubic yards
  4. Or in bags (2 cu ft each): 32 ÷ 2 = 16-18 bags

Cost: 18 bags × $8 = $144 OR 1.5 cu yd bulk × $45 = $68 + delivery

Frequently Asked Questions

Bags vs bulk soil - which is better?

Bulk is cheaper for anything over 1/2 cubic yard. Bags cost $3-8 for 1-2 cu ft (~$150+/yard!). Bulk: $30-60/yard + delivery. For one 4×8 raised bed, bulk is borderline; for multiple beds, bulk wins easily.

Can I use 100% compost in raised beds?

Not recommended. Pure compost is too rich (can burn plants), holds too much moisture, and compacts over time. Mix 30-40% compost with topsoil for best results.

How deep should raised bed soil be?

6-12 inches minimum for most vegetables. Tomatoes, peppers, and root crops prefer 12+ inches. Lettuce and herbs can thrive in 6-8 inches. Deeper = better drainage and root growth.

How much does soil settle?

Fresh soil settles 10-20% after the first few waterings. Overfill new beds slightly, or plan to add more soil/compost after a few weeks. Topping off annually is normal.

What's the difference between topsoil and garden soil?

Topsoil: Just dirt, often screened. Good for filling. Garden soil: Topsoil + compost + amendments. Better for planting. Garden soil costs more but grows plants better.

How much soil for different bed sizes?

4×4 (12" deep): 0.6 cu yd. 4×8 (12" deep): 1.2 cu yd. 4×12 (12" deep): 1.8 cu yd. 8×8 (12" deep): 2.4 cu yd.
